The Beltrami County Historical Society Has a Chance to Acquire a Great Northern Railway Caboose
The Greater Grand Forks Train Club has generously offered to let the Beltrami County Historical Society acquire a Great Northern Railway X259 30' Steel Cupola Caboose for the price of moving it to Bemidji. The Northern Iron Horse Rail Road Society will partner with the Society to organize the physical move of the caboose and safety preparations for visitors once it's in place. However, the project will require a crane to load and unload at each end, and heavy trucks to transport it about 120 miles to Bemidji. The cost estimate is around $50,000, but local contracting firms have provided tremendous support, and their quotes leave $10,000 - $15,000 to raise for loading, permitting, transportation, unloading, and initial preservation costs.
We are committed to caring for the caboose and maintaining it for our community and visitors to enjoy the rich history of the Great Northern Railway and the importance of rail transportation in Beltrami County and Minnesota. Your donation will help the caboose find its permanent home in Bemidji and provide for resources to make the train safe and accessible for all visitors. Funds raised in excess of need will be saved to support caboose upkeep and insurance.
